What began in Napa Valley continues in Texas.

(Extension. Evolution. A new argument for place.)

THE DEBATE has always believed that wine is most alive when it has something to say. That belief was born in Napa Valley, and it does not stop at the state line.

The new tasting room in Fredericksburg will be home to an expanding portfolio that spans both regions: the single-vineyard expressions that have defined THE DEBATE alongside Texas wines produced by THE DEBATE from Hill Country fruit, wines shaped by the soils, climate, and spirit of a place that has earned its place on the world stage.
The space will also be home to additional wine programs under THE DEBATE family, each with its own distinct point of view, designed to welcome a wider range of wine lovers at every level of curiosity and every occasion.

This is not a replication of a Napa Valley experience. It is something that could only happen here, grounded in community, shaped by local influence, and honest about what this land can produce on its own terms.

The Tasting Room

The space is being designed as an intimate yet elevated destination, where structured tastings and relaxed, social experiences share equal footing. A covered patio looks out over the Hill Country landscape. Inside, the conversation continues.

Guests can expect to explore wines from both Napa Valley and Texas Hill Country across a range of styles, with a hospitality approach that blends education with ease. Conversations are encouraged here. Perspectives are shared. The wines do the rest.

Construction is underway by Tisdale Construction. Opening Spring 2027.

The Winemaker

Jean Hoefliger

Jean Hoefliger’s work spans vineyards across the globe. His consultancy in Texas began five years ago and has grown into something deeper than professional curiosity, a genuine love for a place that earns it.

In addition to his role with THE DEBATE, Jean has worked with some of the region’s most respected producers, including William Chris Vineyard, Lost Draw, and Texas Wine Collective. That experience has given him a rare appreciation for what makes Texas Hill Country genuinely its own: a terroir defined not only by its soils and climate, but by the people and culture that shape it.

After years of working across wine regions around the world, nothing prepared me for Texas. The energy here is unlike anywhere else, and so is the sense of place. What excites me most is the chance to explore how our philosophy of site, expression, and balance can breathe differently within a landscape that is so authentically its own.

– Jean Hoefliger, Winemaker

The Debate newspaper

Press Release

Every vintage of THE DEBATE arrives wrapped in its own custom newspaper, an archive of the moment, a snapshot of the conversations shaping the world when the wine was born. This tradition began in the home of Winemaker Jean Hoefliger, where each harvest season becomes more than a chapter in the vineyard’s story; it becomes a chapter in his family’s.

Around their dinner table, always loud, warm, and filled with good food, Jean and his family pore over the year’s most significant topics. Headlines, questions, opposing viewpoints, wins, losses, what-ifs. Jean believes that wine isn’t just meant to be tasted; it’s meant to be talked over. And for his four young sons, these evenings are lessons in life as much as they are discussions about the world. They learn that differing perspectives aren’t a divide, but an invitation. That listening is just as important as speaking. The art of conversation is something worth practicing, protecting, and passing down.
